CTE Promotional Poster

Image
Here is my poster.  This project definitely took the most effort of all of them, save maybe the vector car illustration. I tried to post the PDF but it was not supported.  I sent it over via email. I made several different versions before settling on this one.  I tried to tie the colors together and I like how I made the computer and the waves around it. I also like the monkey a lot. Here are some earlier versions that I got feedback on from Mr. Wilson and my friends and decided to change: I liked the boxes on this one because they kind of tied the colors together, but they also made it look unfinished and weird. I also changed the text and I think it looks better now. I still like this one to be honest.  I got feedback that the filagree clashed with the green and white in the background, which is why I switched it to the white part. Rectangles look bad. Another weird filagree attempt. I nearly turned this one in as my final but I thin...

Magazine Cover

I decided to hand-write the title and use the photoshop pencil tool to make it look more antique.  I would have like to finished it more in Indesign but I'm going to work my portfolio first.  When I finish I may return to this to fix up the typography and add more elements to it.

Final Logo Designs

Image
I showed my two final designs in black and white, as well as a blank scaleable bee that can be used for decoration and shows the art in its most neutral form, without the circle or text.  The bottom is the letterhead I used for the identity kit.  It not only shows how the logo will be used, it also fills up the bottom of the page nicely.

Logo Design Identitiy Kit

I made a logo for my old school library because the librarian wants me to design her one.  This will be one of the ideas I'll present to her for the library. I didn't use designs on the back of the business card because I wasn't sure what other information to include.  I didn't want to include the school's address or the librarians' real names because it felt weird to post that on my blog.  Since the card isn't for one person, it would be hard to find contact information for the library.  For this reason I don't think this card would have a backside, except for the blank white back shown underneath it. I wanted to put the logo on the cover of a book but I couldn't find a good template.  I used the ideas and templates that I had.  I ended up making several variations on the logo for the different products.  All of them are black and white.  The white detail bees fill in blank space while showing how the logo would function in negative color. ...

Package Design

Image
Here is the flat map version of my package design.  I will have photos soon but not now because the SD card in the camera wasn't working the first time I tried to take photos. I also wanted to include my rough draft to show progress: It got a little bit messed up and the layers were mixed together which made it more difficult.  I also thought the design looked busy and a friend told me I should make it smaller.  I made the design elements smaller and centered them.  I also made my own nutrition facts label because I couldn't find a good template.  Overall I like the result except for the fact that the nutrition facts are upside-down when printed.

Career Expo

At the career expo I learned a lot about jobs I am highly interested in.  I got to talk to a muralist who gave me advice on donating to places first (I was planning on donating hand-drawn activity books to Stanford Children's and he gave me advice on how to go about it as well as information on a workshop he's doing).  I also learned about structuring a portfolio by painting on friends' walls or your own and then taking photos (something I want to do for fun but didn't realize could be useful to get jobs). I also talked a marine biologist who told me to continue volunteering at the Seymour Center and that I didn't even need to have college experience if I had research experience and talked about research trips I could go on as soon as I'm eighteen. A woman talking about teaching said I should do whatever I'm interested in during school until I get my bachelor's and then I can take education classes. I talked to the Conservation Corps and the park r...

Typography Poster

Image
I wrote the text for this poster in Adobe Illustrator and painted the picture with gouache and ballpoint pen on lined paper.  Because Barry illustrates using ink and watercolor on lined paper, I thought it was fitting for the quote.  I edited the drawing in Photoshop and then put it on the poster.  I had to go back into Photoshop and cut the bottom of it off because it didn't fit.

Color Theory Assignment Part C Writing

Image
Color can be made up of and mixed from light or pigment.  In the subtractive color palette, which is used when mixing pigments, the primary colors are red, yellow, and blue, which make brown when mixed in the same quantities.  The additive color palette, which is used when mixing light such as on a computer screen, has the primary colors of red, green, and blue, which turn into white light when mixed.  Secondary colors come from the mixing of two primary colors, such as red and yellow making orange.  Tertiary colors are made when a primary color is combined with a secondary color, such as red and orange being mixed to make red-orange.  Colors carry deep biological and social/cultural connotations and meaning which influences us in different ways.  For example, the color red can represent stopping because of the connotation of stoplights and stop-signs and because it is a bright and noticeable color.  This is often taken advantage of in both art and mar...

Color Theory Notes

Color Theory Notes Primary, secondary, and tertiary colors Subtractive (RYB, makes brown when mixed, pigment) and Additive (RGB, makes white when mixed, light) ROYGBIV—color spectrum Wavelengths have different spaces between their peaks.   It appears to us as different colors. Dark color perceived as receding, and light color is perceived as advancing — not always true I immediately thought of atmospheric perspective on mountains.   The further ones are lighter. Warm (red, yellow, orange) and cool colors (blue, green, purple) Purple doesn’t really exist on the spectrum.   Purple is invented when the rods and cones in our eyes can’t recognize the color. Print Process Model (CMYK) prints the colors in dots that our eye blends together into one color. Color Modes—monochrome (tints, shades, and tones of a single hue), grey scale (black&white), web safe rgb (can go on a screen). Limitation makes work stronger, incites problem s...

Graphic Design Elements and Principles Notes

Design elements are the basic units of a visual image.  Principles are the rules that help the design makes sense.  All visual art can be broken down into elements and analyzed. The difference between art and design is that art is made for the artist to solicit an emotional response in the viewer.  Design is about communication.  It bears a strong message to the audience. Design Elements: --Space 2d or 3d illusion of depth negative space --Line variable thickness, texture, direction you can make a line w/ negative space --Color color palette... be deliberate --Shape organic, geometric, abstract good design...recognizable by profile --Texture implied texture you can use adobe illustrator brushes use layers dirt real life texture such as for business cards --Value light and dark qualities of work...contrast creates depth to create an object and not just a shape --Balance symmetry asymmetry making it look right balance by concept...light...
